Happy New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Cue the fireworks! (Who knows how many more times I’ll get to say that??)

I wrote in my last post that I’ve been talking to doctors about having a shortened lifespan based on the limits of modern medicine. We all know that our days are numbered, but it definitely gives a different perspective when a doctor says it out loud right to your face.

It is shocking news. You may wonder how I can possibly say “Happy New Year” in light of this disheartening diagnosis.

Here’s the deal: As I face the realization that I may only have a few more times to wish you a happy new year, I’m taking full advantage of this opportunity! I want you to experience a year filled with joy and happiness. I hope you’ll enjoy good health. I want you to dream new dreams and experience exciting opportunities in the coming year. It’s a “new beginning!” I want you to have dreams and goals as you enter this new year.

Mine is a new beginning, too. It just comes with some built-in hurdles. I’m not a big believer in New Year’s Resolutions, but I always use this time to set some goals. Here are some of my dreams for the coming year. Maybe they’ll help you formulate your own dreams, plans, resolutions, goals – whatever you want to call them.

Connect with my Loved Ones
I want to spend quality time with my family and friends, including our B&B guests. I suppose there’s an underlying need for support and companionship, but being with you all brings me great joy.

Lean on the Lord
I know I can’t do this on my own. Pray that I’ll trust Him every day, every hour. I’ll be leaning on you all for prayer support, and I’ll be praying for you. May the Lord help all of us walk more closely with Him.

Find Joy in the Journey

I plan to make the most of the time that I have, and I encourage each of you to do the same. I feel like I’ve always lived that way, finding joy in the big things and the small. Don’t overlook blessings. Don’t take life for granted. I get excited when I see a beautiful view, when I get an unexpected discount, when the line moves fast, and when the food is especially good. Find things every day that make you feel joyful. I believe I have a thankful heart, and I encourage you to focus on having one, too.

Create Meaningful Memories
I feel like my wings have been clipped, but I still want to do. Go. See. Be. There are many activities that hold personal significance and bring me joy, and I wish for ways to continue to experience them. There are many things I’d love to do. Not sure I’ll be able to, but… I’m still a dreamer! There’s still hope!

Express Myself Through Writing
I’m known as the “wordsmith” in our DCFS office, and I’d like to do more blogging and more thoughtful posting. I have a beautiful journal, and I want to write down my thoughts and feelings. I understand it can be good therapy!

Enjoy Simple Pleasures
I’ve always been able to find joy in small, everyday moments. I love a good laugh! My dad always said, “It takes so little to entertain some people!” (Me!) May we always see the good and look past the negative.

I haven’t taken time lately to play the piano. Or to do needlepoint. Or decorate fancy sugar cookies. I hope to be able to do some of those things that bring me a sense of accomplishment and joy.

Focus on My Well-Being
I have no choice but to prioritize self-care by paying attention to my physical and emotional well-being. There’s a whole team of people trying to keep me on track with this one! But… maybe I’ll schedule time for me… get a massage, or a pedicure or do something else that I don’t typically do.

Celebrate Milestones
If you thought I celebrated every holiday for a month before, brace yourself! I plan to really celebrate important milestones, whether they are mine – or yours! It will give me something to look forward to, and it’s a way to stay present in each moment.

We each have only one life. I want to experience it fully. I’m hopeful that the Lord may give me some additional time. However long I have, please pray that I will spend my time well.
I know that many of you have questions about what I’m going through, and I promise I’ll do my best to answer them.
But that’s a post for another day.
